  4.    it was only 10:15 a.m., but it was
  5.  
  6. already 92 degrees on what promised to
  7.  
  8. be a hot and steamy friday, july 12th.
  9.  
  10. sgt. haskill had spent his first hour at
  11.  
  12. the station house cursing the broken air
  13.  
  14. conditioner and fantasizing about 
  15.  
  16. floating on woodley lake, when the phone
  17.  
  18. rang, snapping him back to reality.
  19.  
  20. *
  21.    ms. jane hu, cashier at the fragrant
  22.  
  23. jade restaurant (n), was calling to
  24.  
  25. report a theft. the fragrant jade's
  26.  
  27. owner, su li chen, also owned a collec-
  28.  
  29. tion of exquisite carved jade
  30.  
  31. sculptures. last night, mr. chen had
  32.  
  33. held a small family gathering in his
  34.  
  35. home above the restaurant in honor of
  36.  
  37. his nephew, tom chu, who had just been
  38.  
  39. accepted to huxley college. the other
  40.  
  41. guests included his nephews, david lee
  42.  
  43. and hyung lee, and his niece, judy chen.
  44.  
  45. during the party, someone stole the
  46.  
  47. kingfisher, the finest sculpture in
  48.  
  49. mr. chen's collection.

  52.    while sgt. haskill sat in a semi-
  53.  
  54. stupor from the heat, ms. hu went on to
  55.  
  56. give the following information on each
  57.  
  58. of the people at the party:

  61.    tom chu had been raised by his uncle,

  63. su li. tom's father, ku ming chu, had
  64.  
  65. immigrated to the u.s. from hong kong
  66.  
  67. with tom's mother. both were killed in

  69. an automobile accident. tom is very

  71. upset because he had been accepted to
  72.  
  73. m.i.t.'s engineering program, but uncle
  74.  
  75. su li is insisting that he go to huxley
  76.  
  77. college. tom is head waiter at the
  78.  
  79. fragrant jade.

  82.    david lee, also had lived with ku
  83.  
  84. ming chu, his uncle, and moved in with
  85.  
  86. his other uncle, su li, when ku ming chu
  87.  
  88. was killed. su li loaned david money to
  89.  
  90. open computer mall, a computer store in
  91.  
  92. the westron mall (l). however, david is
  93.  
  94. clearing next to nothing from the store,
  95.  
  96. after the loan repayments to his uncle,
  97.  
  98. su li.

  101.    hyung lee, david's brother, was left
  102.  
  103. in china when ku ming came to new york.
  104.  
  105. hyung is studying at huxley college,
  106.  
  107. because the chinese communists want
  108.  
  109. u.s.-trained professionals, and they
  110.  
  111. prefer that he be near family while
  112.  
  113. studying.

  116.    judy chen's father, tak san chen, was
  117.  
  118. su li's older brother and should have
  119.  
  120. inherited the family jade collection.
  121.  
  122. however, in 1948, when the communists
  123.  
  124. took over the village where the chen's
  125.  
  126. had their land holding, tak san was in
  127.  
  128. england, studying medicine. su li stole
  129.  
  130. away with the family treasure in order
  131.  
  132. to keep the communist party from taking
  133.  
  134. or destroying it.

  137.    when the brothers met years later in
  138.  
  139. the u.s., su li refused to give up the
  140.  
  141. jade collection saying he rescued it
  142.  
  143. and thus earned the right to keep it.

  145. judy is still bitter about that.

  155. 3. locate the missing kingfisher, or
  156.    tell where it can be found.
